Product Description

CARNIVOROUS PLANTS: Carnivorous plants have the most bizarre adaptations to low-nutrient environments. These plants obtain some nutrients by trapping and digesting various invertebrates. Because insects are one of the most common prey items for most carnivorous plants, they are sometimes called insectivorous plants. It is not surprising that the most common habitat for these plants is in bogs and fens, where nutrient concentrations are low but water and sunshine seasonally abundant. As many as thirteen species of carnivorous plants have been found in a single bog (Folkerts, 1982). Most plants absorb nitrogen from the soil through their roots. But carnivorous plants absorb nitrogen from their animal prey through their leaves specially modified as traps. Common Name: 'Sweet' Pitcher Plant. Ornamental Features: The ruffled hood of the upright pitcher makes this plant standout. The hood completely covers the opening of the pitcher. An added feature is the mix of white color and red veins on and near the hood. Habit and Growth Rate: Clumping, upright growth. Grows to about 16 inches. Landscape Value: Plant near bogs or other wet areas. Can make an excellent container if watered properly. Can also be used in beds with plants requiring similar care. Hardiness: Zone 7-10. Culture: Requires moist, acidic soil and very little fertilizer. Full to slightly filtered sun. Also makes a great house plant or terrarium plant.
