Product Description

Natives of Thailand, the Siam Tulips (Curcuma alismatifolia) are fantastic to say the least. They produce some of the most spectacular displays in all of the plant world. Curcuma alismatifolia is member of the family Zingiberaceae (ginger). This extra large pink variety is one of the best Siam Tulips offered. It is grown by millions in Thailand and is also a hot item in Holland and Israel where it is grown for cut flowers and pot plants. This plant is a long lasting, repeat blooming, full-sun loving, easy to grow and very productive. It will bloom all summer. The Siam Tulip flower is held above the foliage does look like a tulip, hence it's other common name, "Summer Tulip." Photos of large area plantings in Thailand look exactly like fields of pink tulip in Holland. Makes a great house plant. Grow curcuma in sun or shade. In full sun, especially in hot climates, it's helpful to keep curcuma moist. If your soil tends to dry out much, it's best to grow curcuma in partial shade. This summer-blooming flower holds up to dry conditions fairly well when its grown in the shade. Curcuma prefers moist, well-drained soil that has a lot of organic matter, such as compost, in it. If your soil has a high sand or clay content, add organic matter before planting for optimal performance from your plant. Water curcuma regularly if your area doesn't get much natural rain; it thrives with about an inch of moisture each week while it's actively growing. Fertilize curcuma during spring and summer with any general-purpose fertilizer. Follow the directions on the packaging for application rates. Prune curcuma in autumn, when the foliage dies back, to keep your garden looking fresh and tidy. Many gardeners like to deadhead, or remove the faded flowers, to keep their plants looking in tip-top shape. While removing old flowers makes the plant look better, it's not necessary. Curcuma grows and blooms just fine if it's not deadheaded. Note: Curcuma is not intended for animal or human consumption. Curcuma goes dormant in winter, even in Zone 10, so don't be alarmed if your plant starts to have yellow leaves in the fall. The leaves will all disappear over the winter but resprout again in the spring and bloom again in the summer. Measurements are approximate.
  • Light: Thrives in bright, filtered light to moderate direct morning sun. Protect from scorching midday direct rays to preserve bloom longevity.
  • Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged during active spring and summer growth.
  • Temperature & Humidity: Warm-loving tropical plant (68°F–85°F). Enjoys moderate-to-high humidity; protect from chilly drafts below 55°F.
  • Dormancy Note: Curcuma naturally enters winter dormancy as daylight decreases in autumn. Cut back watering once foliage dies back and store the rhizome in a dry, frost-free location until warm spring temperatures arrive.
  • The plant you will receive is growing in a 4" pot.

Plant Care
How will my plant arrive & do I need to repot?

We ship our plants via USPS, so check your mailbox if it is a smaller item.

To ensure your plant stays healthy and happy, we ship it in its original nursery pot—just as it was growing in our greenhouse. There’s no need to repot right away.

We recommend letting your plant acclimate to its new environment after the journey. Give it a few days in a cozy spot with the right light and water, and let it settle in before making any changes. This helps reduce transplant shock and gives your plant the best start in its new home!

Will my plant look like the pictures online?

Yes! The photos with the white background are actual images of the plants we grow and ship.

Keep in mind:

  • If you’re ordering a plant in a 2.5" pot, it’s a starter plant. That means it will be smaller in size and will need time to establish roots and grow before reaching maturity.
  • All plants are healthy and ready to thrive with a little time and care!

If the plant shows up in the search, it’s available! Under “Currently Available,” you’ll see exactly how many we have in stock.

If the plant doesn’t appear, it’s currently out of stock.

We receive new shipments regularly, so feel free to check back often—your favorite plant might be back sooner than you think!

Why does my perennial look sad?

If you received a perennial during the winter months, it may arrive looking brown, bare, or even lifeless. That’s completely normal—it’s simply dormant, not dead. Many perennials go into a natural resting phase during colder months to conserve energy for the growing season ahead.

What should you do?

Keep the plant in a cool, dry place with some light.

Water lightly every 3 weeks—just enough to keep the soil from completely drying out. Avoid soggy soil or overwatering.

Once warmer weather returns, gradually introduce the plant to sunlight and plant it outdoors after the last chance of frost has passed.

Your plant may look quiet now, but with a little patience, it will bounce back beautifully in spring!
