Product Description

The begonia is one of the great groups of cultivated ornamental plants. Because of the great numbers of interesting forms, begonias have appealed strongly to collectors and fanciers. Rex begonias are grown for their variously and usually brightly colored leaves of various irregular shapes, often silvery or with bright green or red. The geographical distribution of begonias is very disjunctive and localized. They are indigenous to Mexico, Central and South America, Asia, and South Africa. The first begonia was introduced into England in 1777, Begonia nitida. Since then, about 200 have proved of value to the horticulturist. Few other plants have been improved or varied so rapidly, there being thousands of variations now in cultivation, displaying the most gorgeous coloring in their leaves. Begonia (Begonia maculata variegata) Festive, cheerful innocence describes this fancy begonia nicknamed "Polka Dot." Large, dramatic silver spots and matching light pink flowers are some of the best features. Another feature worth sharing is that this stunning bat-winged begonia is suited for basket culture or upright pots and is a vigorous grower.

Bigger than I thought but had damage

Posted by Sue on Mar 16th 2023

I was surprised at how large the plant was for the price when it arrived (about 12 inches tall and wide). This was a very mature plant. It had more leaves so much bushier than the photo. The downside is that it looked as if it had been neglected. Every leaf was damaged and dusty. It wasn't damage from the shipping. It just looked like it had been neglected. I trimmed off almost 50% of the leaves because they looked so raggedy. The ones I kept have damage as well. But the upside is that after a couple weeks, I have about 7-8 new leaves emerging. So it must have healthy roots and it seems to like my northern facing window. So after the new leaves get bigger I will slowly remove the older damaged leaves. It doesn't look pretty now, but I think after the new leaves fill in it will be nice. It's a very interesting plant to watch because it grows very fast.
