Product Description

Eucalyptus lunata 'Moon Lagoon'(Fine-Leafed Mallee) - A shrubby small Eucalyptus that can reach 12 feet tall with small rounded spade-shaped, gray-green juvenile leaves flushed a pale purple that matures to a leaf that is green with a curved boomerang shape. If left to mature, in spring to summer appear reddish-orange caps that open to expose white flowers. This plant can also be cut hard every few years to maintain it as a medium-sized shrub to 4 feet tall and to promote the fine textured and aromatic juvenile growth that has become very popular in the California cut foliage market. Plant in full sun to light shade. Irrigate occasionally to infrequently. Hardy to about 23 F but can resprout when top growth frozen - root hardiness not known. A nice fine-textured shrub for the garden and for cut foliage - it reportedly looks good up to 2 weeks in the vase. Moon Lagoon is possibly a naturally occurring hybrid but is also sometimes listed as Eucalyptus latens, a species known only from one dense stand in the jarrah forests of the south-eastern corner of Western Australia that is sometimes included with the more widespread E. foecunda in the Proantherae series of Eucalyptus. In the July 2012 issue of Nuytsia, the journal of the Western Australian Herbarium there is an article titled "Notes on the identity and status of Western Australian phrase names in Corymbia and Eucalyptus (Myrtaceae)" by Dean Nicolle, Malcolm French and Kevin Thiele they list a Eucalyptus sp. Sullivan Soak (D. Nicolle & M. French DN 5503) and note that "both E. sp. Sullivan Soak and E. latens are members of E. ser. Porantherae, in which a number of potentially undescribed taxa have been identified and which is the subject of an extensive and long-term taxonomic study". Further note that "Eucalyptus sp. Sullivan Soak has been known in cultivation since the 1990's under the name Eucalyptus ‘Moon Lagoon’. We are unaware who coined the name, or why, although the taxon is the dominant species in the vicinity of a crescent-shaped salt lake with a distinctive lunette just east of Lake Magenta Nature Reserve." The information displayed on this page is based on research conducted about this plant in our library and from reliable online sources. We also consider observations that we have made of it growing in the nursery's garden and in other gardens, as well how it has performed in our crops out in the nursery field. We will incorporate comments that we receive from others as well, and welcome hear from anyone who may have additional information, particularly if they have knowledge of cultural information we do not mention that would aid others in growing Eucalyptus lunata 'Moon Lagoon'.

Plant Care
How will my plant arrive & do I need to repot?

We ship our plants via USPS, so check your mailbox if it is a smaller item.

To ensure your plant stays healthy and happy, we ship it in its original nursery pot—just as it was growing in our greenhouse. There’s no need to repot right away.

We recommend letting your plant acclimate to its new environment after the journey. Give it a few days in a cozy spot with the right light and water, and let it settle in before making any changes. This helps reduce transplant shock and gives your plant the best start in its new home!

Will my plant look like the pictures online?

Yes! The photos with the white background are actual images of the plants we grow and ship.

Keep in mind:

  • If you’re ordering a plant in a 2.5" pot, it’s a starter plant. That means it will be smaller in size and will need time to establish roots and grow before reaching maturity.
  • All plants are healthy and ready to thrive with a little time and care!
Is my plant in stock?

Click on the product listing to view the details.

If the plant shows up in the search, it’s available! Under “Currently Available,” you’ll see exactly how many we have in stock.

If the plant doesn’t appear, it’s currently out of stock.

We receive new shipments regularly, so feel free to check back often—your favorite plant might be back sooner than you think!

Why does my perennial look sad?

If you received a perennial during the winter months, it may arrive looking brown, bare, or even lifeless. That’s completely normal—it’s simply dormant, not dead. Many perennials go into a natural resting phase during colder months to conserve energy for the growing season ahead.

What should you do?

Keep the plant in a cool, dry place with some light.

Water lightly every 3 weeks—just enough to keep the soil from completely drying out. Avoid soggy soil or overwatering.

Once warmer weather returns, gradually introduce the plant to sunlight and plant it outdoors after the last chance of frost has passed.

Your plant may look quiet now, but with a little patience, it will bounce back beautifully in spring!
