Katsura Japanese Maple. Acer palatum 'Katsurai'. The leaves of Katsura are spectacular in the early spring when they emerge in colors of yellow and orange. The leaves mature to a bright green and then back to yellow and orange colors again in the fall. The plants grow upright with lots of twigs and side branching. Older plants are usually only 4-5 tall but occasionally 10 + trees are reported. Also makes a great bonsai! When choosing a location, keep in mind that this tree has a slow growth rate. It grows up to 6 feet in height and 4 feet in spread. It can be planted in zones 5 to 8. Prefers well-drained soil that is rich on organic material and full or partial sun. METAMORPHOSA® is a shrubby Japanese maple noted for the neat texture and ever-changing color of its foliage. In spring, the dissected foliage emerges yellow; a pink margin soon develops, then that shifts to white with shades of reddish-orange in summer. In autumn, the entire leaf transforms to orange-red and eventually red-violet. A finalist in RHS Plant of the Year competition at the Chelsea Flower Show developed by Mr. van Meuwen and Mr. Keijzer of the Netherlands. Seiryu is selected for its upright, vase-shaped form; displays finely dissected lacy green foliage. Excellent accent, wonderful focal point for the patio area.
