Product Description

Grown in Ohio, this Sweet Bay Laurel is hardier indoors or out than Bay Laurel grown in warm climates. Sweet Bay Laurel (Laurus nobilis). Bay laurel is a pyramid-shaped tree or large shrub with aromatic, evergreen leaves and shiny gray bark. It can reach 60' in height in its native range, but generally is much smaller (3-10' tall) in culture. The leaves are elliptic, 3-4" long, rather thick and leathery, and shiny dark green. Clusters of small yellow flowers are produced in spring, followed, on the female plants, by shiny black or purple berries about 1/2" long. Bay laurel is native to the southern Mediterranean region. It is grown commercially for its aromatic leaves in Turkey, Algeria, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Italy, France, and Mexico. Bay laurel grows best in partial shade. Moisture: Water when dry. Bay laurel thrives with frequent watering in rich, well-drained soil. Zones 8 - 10. Propagation: Bay laurel seeds are slow to germinate and often rot before they do. Cuttings taken from semi-hard, green tip shoots in summer will root in 6-9 months if they don't rot first. It can be grown as a house plant in room temperatures ranging between 40° and 65°, if it gets at least four hours of bright light a day, or 12 hours of strong artificial light. Keep the soil moist in spring and moderately dry the rest of the year; good drainage is essential. Bay Laurel makes an excellent house plant in room temperatures ranging between 40° and 75°, if it gets at least four hours of bright light a day, or 12 hours of strong artificial light. Keep the soil moist in spring and moderately dry the rest of the year; good drainage is essential. It can be set outside during the summer and brought inside during the winter. The popular culinary seasoning, bay leaf, is used extensively in French, Italian, Spanish and Creole cooking. Measurements are approximate.

Plant Care
How will my plant arrive & do I need to repot?

We ship our plants via USPS, so check your mailbox if it is a smaller item.

To ensure your plant stays healthy and happy, we ship it in its original nursery pot—just as it was growing in our greenhouse. There’s no need to repot right away.

We recommend letting your plant acclimate to its new environment after the journey. Give it a few days in a cozy spot with the right light and water, and let it settle in before making any changes. This helps reduce transplant shock and gives your plant the best start in its new home!

Will my plant look like the pictures online?

Yes! The photos with the white background are actual images of the plants we grow and ship.

Keep in mind:

  • If you’re ordering a plant in a 2.5" pot, it’s a starter plant. That means it will be smaller in size and will need time to establish roots and grow before reaching maturity.
  • All plants are healthy and ready to thrive with a little time and care!
Is my plant in stock?

To see if a specific plant is available, head to our website and use the search bar (look for the magnifying glass in the top right corner).

Type the name of the plant you’re looking for.

Click on the product listing to view the details.

If the plant shows up in the search, it’s available! Under “Currently Available,” you’ll see exactly how many we have in stock.

If the plant doesn’t appear, it’s currently out of stock.

We receive new shipments regularly, so feel free to check back often—your favorite plant might be back sooner than you think!

Why does my perennial look sad?

If you received a perennial during the winter months, it may arrive looking brown, bare, or even lifeless. That’s completely normal—it’s simply dormant, not dead. Many perennials go into a natural resting phase during colder months to conserve energy for the growing season ahead.

What should you do?

Keep the plant in a cool, dry place with some light.

Water lightly every 3 weeks—just enough to keep the soil from completely drying out. Avoid soggy soil or overwatering.

Once warmer weather returns, gradually introduce the plant to sunlight and plant it outdoors after the last chance of frost has passed.

Your plant may look quiet now, but with a little patience, it will bounce back beautifully in spring!

Can I add to my existing order?

Unfortunately, we’re not able to add items to an order once it’s placed because we don’t keep credit card info for your security.

My plant isn't looking too hot, what do I do?

We stand behind the quality of our plants and want you to be happy!

It’s normal for live plants to show some stress after shipping. We recommend pruning off any damaged foliage to help your plant focus its energy on fresh, healthy growth.

If your plant’s condition is worse than minor shipping stress, please email us at greenhousematt@gmail.com with a photo and your order number. We’ll be happy to replace or refund your purchase.

I need to cancel my order. What should I do?

No problem! Please email us at greenhousematt@gmail.com and include your order number in the message. We’ll be happy to help you with the cancellation process.

Do you offer garden design help?

While we’re happy to share advice and gardening tips, we don’t offer formal garden design services.

If time allows, we’ll gladly suggest plants that work well in your conditions. However, due to the high volume of emails, we can’t provide personalized design consultations for every request.

I received this product a week ago in excellent condition. It was packaged well and the plant looked very healthy. A week later, the plant continues to thrive. I am in zone 5 and plan to raise it indoors in the winter. I definitely will recommend this seller and will look into ordering more plants from them in the future.
