The Japanese painted ferns were (as all plants shipped from Hirt’s) meticulously and securely packaged and arrived in great plant health. I am looking forward to seeing them grow and spread in the garden.

ATHYRIUM NIPONICUM REGAL RED~ A spreading mound of ruffled fronds with dark violet interiors & bright silver edges. Plant in light shade for best affect otherwise partial sun to full shade. Size: 12-24 inches. Zones 4 to 9; Dormant shipping in winter.
FERN: A fern is any one of a group of about 12,000 species of plants. Unlike mosses they have xylem and phloem (making them vascular plants). They have stems, leaves, and roots like other vascular plants. Ferns do not have either seeds or flowers (they reproduce via spores).
Hardy ferns grow best in moist, shady locations with soil high in organic matter. Their varied forms, sizes, and textures add interest to the garden. Highly variegated, green fronds are shaded with silver and highlighted with burgundy red. Colors become more intense with some morning of afternoon sun.
