Product Description

Salvia is a large group of plants that includes the culinary sage as well as many that are grown as bedding annuals. This one is a perennial, forming a bushy mound of fuzzy olive-green leaves. Upright spikes of violet-purple flowers begin to appear in early summer, and will continue for weeks if the spent heads are regularly removed. It tolerates many soil conditions, and is drought tolerant, once established. A nice choice for the border, low enough to use for edging. If plants become floppy in mid summer they should be clipped back hard to rejuvenate the foliage.

    Better Choice

I chose this variety of miniature and the large purple sage bushes. These were by far in better shape. Very small for 'quart' sized plants. No effects from transplanting, again can't say the same for the other variety. Not sure some of those will make it.

Nice looking for time of planting season.

Plants arrived in good condition, soil in pots thanks to taping, and no damage to foliage. Foliage was trimmed back just right for midsummer with new foliage appearing. Watered, left tape in place to maintain moisture and placed where they'd get a few hours of pm sun. Was 5 days before planted because bed wasn't quite ready. Planted last night and today plants showed no sign of drooping. Used to have these pretty salvias every year until bed settled under them and got too wet for them to survive winter. This time I used builder's sand and soil on top to build up the bed before planting. These salvias can take more moisture than others and bees love them. They are impossible to find in my area so was so pleased to come across them on Hirt's website. By the way, what does the term "Dwarf" on the tag mean? Is there more than one kind of Purple Rain?
