Lovage. Levisticum officinale
3-6 ft.Hardy Perennial
Culpepper wrote of Lovage in the 1600s, "It is a known and much praised remedy." Grown for its seeds and young stems which are used as tasty condiments, the celery-like leaf stalks can be blanched for use as a vegetable while the roots are said to possess medicinal qualities. Direct sun in late summer or mid-spring. Can also be started indoors 6-8 weeks before last spring frost. For best leaf harvest, cut back flowering stems before blooms form.
