Product Description

Firefly Heather. Calluna vulgaris 'Firefly'. Drought tolerant and irresistible to butterflies and hummingbirds! Humble Heather has certainly come a long way! This low-growing shrub definitely demonstrates year-round beauty, whether from its abundant summer blooms or its ever-changing foliage. We highly recommend it for use in sun-soaked garden spots from the border to along the driveway. 'Firefly' begins spring with new foliage of brightest chartreuse. The tiny leaves are abundant and dense, and with the arrival of midsummer are topped by masses of grape-purple flowers that persist for many weeks. In autumn, the leaves turn from green to brilliant shades of orange and red, then turn brick red for winter! Winner of the prized Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticulture Society, 'Firefly' is a charming garden presence, irresistible to butterflies and hummingbirds and, once established, indifferent to dry spells. The flowers are fabulous for fresh or dried arrangements, and the foliage is so striking -- really the size of fireflies, and almost as bright! Expect 'Firefly' to reach just 12-14 inches high and wide in the garden or container. Do not miss the color show from this incredible presence! Zones 4-6. Measurements are approximate.
