Dark Beauty Toad Lily. Tricyrtis 'Dark Beauty'. Long-lived and very easy to grow. Unlike any other plant in the shade garden, Toad Lily brightens autumn with distinctive starry blooms of cream, heavily spotted with violet. Quite easy to grow and very long-lived, this is a colorful addition to the shade. The flowers open in early and mid-fall from fuzzy burgundy-maroon buds on long, wiry stems, and make excellent cuts for the vase. They are held above large (up to 8 inches long and 3 inches wide) leaves of bright green on slowly spreading plants that thrive in rich, moist, well-drained soil. Ideal for containers as well as the border, woodland garden, and shade foundation, Dark Beauty reachces 30 to 40 inches high and spreads 12 to 15 inches wide. It is generally left alone by nibbling creatures, and tolerant of adversity once established in the partly shaded garden. Divide every few years to create a glorious colony of late-season color. Zones 4-8.
