Product Description

The colorful foliage of Red Threads is especially eye catching. Red and green leaves are a lovely garden compliment to colorful tropical house plants . Red Threads is a low-growing tropical perennial valued for its bushy habit and glossy, colorful leaves. It is native from Mexico to Argentina where it naturally inhabits open forests with ample precipitation. The variable leaves may be blotched with marks of red, yellow, orange, brown, copper or purple and sometimes have contrasting red venation. When conditions are favorable, mature specimens produce lots of small, white flowers that are ornamentally insignificant. Grow Alternanthera in locations with full sun to light shade and fertile soil with good drainage. It is a beautiful foliage plant that will grow as a houseplant if given bright, filtered light. Plant it as an accent plant for containers or plant it in the garden as a groundcover or edging plant.
  • Prefers sun or part-sun, Mature height: 15-18"
  • Keep evenly moist, not wet or dry
  • Easy to grow indoors or out
  • It makes an excellent house plant or bedding plant
  • Immediate shipping, starter plant in 2 1/2" pot

Arrived well packed for its long trip. Now planted in a larger pot on my windowsill and looks great. Am pleased with this purchase.

    Calico plant, red threads

The shipping was 5 stars. Even though I have little faith in plants arriving via regular mail, my plants arrived alive. They were in plastic Pots with plastic wrap around the base to keep soil in place. The soil was still damp and the plants were carefully resting in plastic wrap. I have since repotted the plant and it seems to be alive. The color is not as vibrant as the picture in the listing, but I hope it becomes more bold as it matures. I will definitely purchase from Hirt’s again!
