Product Description

FERN: A fern is any one of a group of about 12,000 species of plants. Unlike mosses they have xylem and phloem (making them vascular plants). They have stems, leaves, and roots like other vascular plants. Ferns do not have either seeds or flowers (they reproduce via spores). The Austral Gem is a dark green Asplenium fern hybrid created by Chris Goudey of Austral Ferns in Victoria, Australia. It is also called the “Bird’s Nest Fern”. This plant is unique to most ferns in the fact that it has stiff, shiny leaves with a waxy texture. It is a medium sized plant that is a moderately slow grower and should not reach over 12” at maturity. The Austral Gem prefers evenly moist soil, and as most ferns, it does not appreciate direct light. It is considered to be much more drought tolerant and more forgiving than other ferns. USDA Hardiness Zones 9-11 or indoors.

    Very Cute

This was one of the only plants I was happy with out of my 7 plant purchase. 2 ivy came infested with worms, the fusion white had nearly every leaf brown, torn or discolored and my green prayer was brown and heavily discolored not to mention this was the ONLY plant of my entire order that was actually in a 4" pot when they all were supposed to be. My austral gem seems to be healthy and I am praying none of the worms transfered to it. I am only disappointed that some of the stems were broken in half, but that is to be expected in shipping I suppose. I live in an apartment and it is doing very well in a low light setting! I recommend misting every other day if you keep it indoors.
