Product Description

Aristolochia clematitis is thought to have been introduced to England from the Mediterranean by the monastic community. In medieval times, the plant was used medicinally in childbirth and as an abortifacient. Birthwort is now rare in the UK, but it survives at a few monastic sites.

Birthwort is a medium to tall scrambling perennial. The leaves are bluntly heart-shaped, alternating, and untoothed. The flowers are yellow, greenish in the throat, tubular with a flattened lip, and swollen at base. They are borne in clusters in the axils of the upper leaves during June to September. Grows 24" tall. Hardy in zones 5-9.
