MONARDA: Very attractive to butterflies, bees and hummingbirds. When crushed, the foliage will release a spicy fragrance and the leaves can be used to make a delightful herbal tea. (Bee balm) Monarda didyma ‘Purple Rooster’ will really “strut its stuff” in the landscape. Selected and named by David and Nancy Nedveck from a batch of didyma seedlings, this three foot Monarda performed well and never required staking. ‘Purple Rooster’ displays royal purple blooms that attract hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. Native to eastern North America, Monarda is easy to grow and has minty aromatic foliage often used to flavor teas.
