Product Description

A knockout Japanese Painted fern with pale-green, double-crested fronds contrasting with a stunning lilac stem. ‘Crested Surf’, a knockout Japanese Painted fern. What makes this taller 20–22" fern stand out are the lovely, unusual colors—the pale-green, double-crested fronds contrasting with a stunning lilac stem. Brings welcome texture and color to the shady middle border, and moist shady spots. Dormant shipping in winter. FERN: A fern is any one of a group of about 12,000 species of plants. Unlike mosses they have xylem and phloem (making them vascular plants). They have stems, leaves, and roots like other vascular plants. Ferns do not have either seeds or flowers (they reproduce via spores). Hardy ferns grow best in moist, shady locations with soil high in organic matter. Their varied forms, sizes, and textures add interest to the garden. Highly variegated, green fronds are shaded with silver and highlighted with burgundy red. Colors become more intense with some morning of afternoon sun. Hardy in zones 3-9. Shade lover grows 14-18 inches tall.

    Byers beware

The fern was improperly packaged and arrived broken and covered in dirt. I notified the vendor same day by email and sent detailed photos with a description. He responded with a request to send additional photos once the plant was cleaned up and re-potted. Odd request - but I complied. There were 4 plants total in the order - 2 were badly damaged. I asked for a refund or replacement on the 2 damaged ones - no response received. I’ve purchased from many nurseries before, and this has been the worst experience thus far. I’m never going to order from Hirts again. Also, shipping was the highest I’ve seen, so it’s amazing that other small, family-owned nurseries manage to ship plants for less and everything arrived undamaged and healthy.
