Product Description
An African species that has been given the name ‘Cabbage Fern’; because of its upswept and out turned sterile fronds which, supposedly, resemble a cabbage. The fertile fronds are undivided and are characteristically lobed, with prominently raised veins. Native to seasonally wet central and eastern Africa including the Congo Basin.
Unlike other Platycerium species, the fronds of P. elephantotis do not fork at all, giving them a very rounded appearance. Tall arching sterile fronds, and deeply veined broad round fertile fronds make this rare fern stand out from the crowd. Its common name is the elephant ear staghorn, and it really does look like a pair of ridiculously large ears. Ideal temperatures are between 60 degrees and 80 degrees. It prefers bright, but indirect light. Keep evenly moist, not wet or dry. This species likes high humidity. Fertilize with dilute (half strength) orchid fertilizer, once a month during the spring and summer. This fern, prefers to be mounted on a sphagnum covered wood plaque. Propagation is by spore, or division.
