Tulipa praestans was introduced to Europe in the 19th century from it's native Central Europe by Eduard Regel, a plant hunting explorer. The flowers are cup shaped, orangey red in colour. Each plant can have up to five flower heads, which is a lot for a tulip, most have just one flower. It has hairy leaves and stems and will grow up to 10" in height. This tulip needs lots of sun and well-drained soil. It grows naturally in gravel soil and on rocky slopes, so it's ideally suited to a rock garden. It also makes a nice cut flower.
