Product Description

Godzilla Giant Japanese Painted Fern. Athyrium niponicum x filix-femina 'Godzilla'. This hybrid grows massive silvery fronds! Dramatic silvery fronds stretch out proudly, making quite a brilliant display in even the shadiest spots! The result of a cross between a Japanese Painted Fern (A. niponicum) and a lady fern (A. filix-femina), this inter-specific hybrid is sterile, and has been propagated by division. Hybrid vigor may also account for the striking growth habit, swiftly reaching up to 3 feet high and 6 feet wide, with exceptionally wide fronds (6 inches) stretching out to create a very full display. You can see where the name comes from: 'Godzilla' really is a monster for the Genus! From its A. niponicum heritage, 'Godzilla' enjoys its silvery painted overlay, adding to the decorative quality of its finely-cut foliage. From its A. filix-femina heritage, it inherits its arching, slowly-spreading form. Athyrium loves moist, loamy soil rich in organic matter (such as you would find on a forest floor). It makes a dramatic silvery statement in those dark corners of the garden, and over time it will spread to fill any sufficiently shady, rich, and moist areas. Best in at least some sun (to intensify the color), this drought-tolerant perennial is left alone by deer and rabbits, thrives in damp soil and rainy conditions, and pairs beautifully with everything from Hosta and Helleborus to Heuchera. Zones 3 to 8. Dormant shipping in winter.
