Product Description

Often known as common ninebark or Atlantic ninebark, Physocarpus opulifolius are valued for their beauty as well as their ability to grow in harsh conditions. 'Festivus Gold' possesses both of these qualities and more! It's a compact, mounded cultivar that's particularly prized for its lovely yellow foliage. The maple-like leaves emerge golden yellow in spring, slowly turning to a chartreuse-lime green by midsummer, and finally to yellow with bronze tinting come fall. White (usually tinged with pink), five-petaled blooms appear in flat, rounded, spiraea-like clusters in late spring -- a wonderful complement to the attractive foliage! The color show doesn't stop there, though! After flowering, red seeds appear in the fall, and once the leaves have gone, you're left with an upright twiggy structure with vertically cracking, exfoliating, orange-brown bark. 'Dart's Gold' is truly a multi-season beauty! Typically growing to 4-5' high and wide, this ninebark thrives in full sun but happily takes part shade as well, although its best color will occur in sun. It's not fussy about soil conditions, tolerating everything from rich and acidic to somewhat alkaline. Its adaptability makes it a great choice for difficult growing areas. Average, dry to medium-moisture, well-drained soils are the best, however. Once established, 'Dart's Gold' can be somewhat drought resistant, but is will grow best with regular watering, especially during periods of dry summers. Prune as needed immediately after bloom. Zones 3-7.
