PALM: Palms are one of the most documented and most studied plants in the world and there are over 2600 species of palm tree types known today. Palm trees have an amazing amount of variations and differences in morphology, creating one the most diverse range of species. Basic characteristics of palm trees include growth from a single stem with crowns of evergreen leaves arranged in either a fan shape or feathery blooms. Most palms have inflorescence containing colorful flowers, which are usually small and white. The fruits of palms are considered to be drupes, or fruits containing a fleshy, soft part surrounding a hard seed center.
If you have a bright sunny space to offer this Chinese Fan Palm (Livistona chinensis), you can enjoy the splendor of its exotic form. This magnificently ornamental plant takes its name from the large, fan-shaped leaves. Chinese Fan Palms grown outdoors will slowly reach heights of 25’ or taller but potted plants kept indoors maintain much more modest proportions.
Palms are attractive ornamentals throughout the world in tropical or Mediterranean-like climates. Many are easy-to-grow houseplants in colder regions and will produce new glossy, dark green leaves each year. The instructions below are for growing indoors.
LIGHT: Provide your plant with plenty of light near a south- or west-facing window.
WATERING: Water thoroughly when the surface of the soil mix is dry to the touch. Plants require less water during the winter months when they are not actively growing.
TEMPERATURE: Provide room temperatures above 50°F.
FERTILIZER: When plants are in active growth from April through September, use a balanced (18-18-18) houseplant fertilizer monthly, diluted to half strength.
The plant you will receive is growing in a 4" growers pot, approximately 6-8 inches tall. Similar to the second photo.
