Product Description

Box Huckleberry 'Berried Treasure' Gaylussacia brachycera. This now rare in the wild blueberry relative is a choice little shrub that is notable on multiple counts. Compact habit to a foot or more tall and slowly spreading by rhizomes, this has good glossy evergreen leaves turning bronzy in winter with small whitish urn-shaped flowers giving way to edible blue berries. A relict species nearly exterminated by the last ice age, box huckleberry is found in isolated colonies which reproduce clonally by extending roots. One colony in Pennsylvania was once estimated to be as many as 13,000 years old; more recent estimates have an upper bound of about 8,000 years, which would make it the oldest woody plant east of the Rocky Mountains. Another colony in Pennsylvania, about 1,300 years old, has been protected by the Hoverter and Sholl Box Huckleberry Natural Area.

    Native Huckleberry Gaylussacia

So I ordered 4 of these little beauties for our interpretive garden and 3 were awesome and 1 looked like it was on its last legs. It is still struggling. I ordered three more for my own garden at home and sent a picture of the sad plant at the same time I ordered the second batch and asked if a replacement for the museum plant could be included, but it must have been too complicate. Instead I was refunded the price of one plant for which Thanks! However, I am really missing that 4th good plant for the bed. Otherwise, Hirts is great - good customer service and I will buy more plants next year.

I wish the plants were held at the nursery until the correct time of planting, according to our plant zone. I did not have the choice of when they were to arrive. I would have ordered them later had I known when they would be sent.

Just as with every plant I've gotten from Hirt's, I am very impressed with the health of this plant. I am looking forward to harvesting its berries.
