This robust, low, spreading groundcover grows just 4 inches high, displaying decorative kidney-shaped leaves. The stems, when broken or bruised, have an aroma of ginger spice. Curious three-petaled brown flowers appear in spring. The thick, tuberous roots can be grated or dried and powdered to produce a ginger flavoring. Native to woodlands throughout the Northeastern United States, plants tolerate poor soils. Perfect for edging woodland paths and planting between flagstone.
Also known as Canadian Ginger. Proper name: Asarum canadensis
